This central ecosystem covers the soda lake, grassy plains, and acacia woodlands. It is the primary area for viewing the park's famous flamingos and endangered rhinos.

You will spend most of your safari driving through these flat, easily accessible zones. Vehicles must stay on designated tracks to protect the habitat, so bring a good telephoto lens.

Lake Nakuru Shoreline

1-2 hoursBest flamingo viewing in dry seasons

This central alkaline soda lake attracts flamingos, pelicans, and grazing waterbucks. The water surface area fluctuates between 5 to 45 square kilometers based on rainfall. Visit during the dry seasons from July to October or January to February for the highest algae concentration. This is when the flamingo flocks are the thickest.

Rhino Sanctuary Woodlands

These grassy plains and acacia woodlands host approximately 150 endangered rhinos. About 80 percent of the population are white rhinos, which frequently graze near the open lakeshore. The remaining 20 percent are black rhinos. You will need to look closer at the thicker brush to spot the black rhinos hiding.

Euphorbia Forest

30-45 minsLargest euphorbia forest in Africa

This unique habitat is the largest forest of its kind in Africa. It features towering, cactus-like Euphorbia candelabrum trees. The dense vegetation provides excellent cover for predators. Scan the high branches carefully, as elusive leopards often rest up there during the day.
